A fitness challenge to remember at Abbeyfield House
There was plenty of laughter at Abbeyfield House in Cowes recently as Richard Quigley MP visited to help us celebrate our 70th anniversary.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly a fitness challenge set by one of our residents, 91-year-old Kathleen, who invited the MP for Isle of Wight West to join her in a special tribute to our anniversary year.
In a nod to our 70 years of history, Kathleen set herself the goal of touching her toes 70 times during the visit. Mr Quigley was happy to join in, but he soon found that keeping up with Kathleen was no easy task.
Despite being 37 years her junior, the MP struggled to match her speed and enthusiasm. Kathleen found the situation hilarious and, after completing all 70 touches, jokingly claimed she was ready to do it all over again.
A chance to connect with the community
After the exercise was over, everyone headed inside for coffee and a special cake arranged in the shape of the number 70. This gave our residents a great opportunity to sit down with Mr Quigley and discuss the issues that matter most to them on the Island.
The conversation covered everything from local transport and schools to the specific challenges of accessing medical treatment on the mainland. It was a fantastic way for the residents to voice their concerns and share their experiences of life on the Isle of Wight directly with their representative.

Seventy years of supporting older people
The visit is part of a year-long series of celebrations across the country to mark seven decades since Abbeyfield was founded in 1956. Our house manager, Lois Rogers, felt the afternoon was a great success, noting that Mr Quigley seemed to care about the residents' stories and was keen to take local issues back to Parliament.
It was a fantastic afternoon that showed exactly why staying active and keeping those community links strong is so important to everyone here.
