Warkworth residents talk politics with local MP
What happens when a Member of Parliament steps into a room full of engaged, politically savvy older people? If the recent visit to Abbeyfield House in Warkworth is any indication, you get an afternoon of insightful debate and meaningful connection.
Local MP David Smith recently toured the Dial Place sheltered housing scheme, meeting with the residents and staff who make this community thrive. Far from a simple photo op, the visit turned into a deep dive into the issues that matter most to the people of Warkworth.
A look behind the scenes
During his tour, Mr. Smith saw firsthand how the scheme offers residents the privacy of their own rooms alongside communal lounges, gardens, and dining areas. The focus here is on active living, with two nutritious meals provided daily and a packed activities schedule designed to keep everyone mentally and physically sharp. By taking care of daily essentials like housekeeping, laundry, and gardening, the staff ensure that residents can focus entirely on enjoying their time and maintaining their independence

House Manager Dhanif Paramban noted that the visit was a massive highlight for the home. Dhanif shared that the residents appreciated Mr. Smith taking the time to sit with everyone and engage in a way that felt sincere. They particularly enjoyed hearing about his personal journey into politics and the experiences that motivated him to serve his constituency.
No topic off-limits
If anyone expected the conversation to stay on small talk, they were mistaken. David Smith was impressed, and perhaps kept on his toes, by the range of topics raised. Residents didn't hold back, questioning the MP on national issues such as migration and taxation, as well as specific local concerns affecting Warkworth. They also discussed the future of care and the specific challenges currently facing sheltered housing providers.
"They certainly didn’t hold back," Mr. Smith remarked. "Their robust questions and insight made for an enjoyable and memorable visit. Abbeyfield House is an excellent example of how older people can maintain their independence while benefiting from shared living, home cooked meals, and meaningful daily activities ."

Starts at Home
This visit wasn’t just a local meet-and-greet; it is part of a vital national conversation. Abbeyfield Living Society is a proud supporter of the Starts at Home campaign, spearheaded by the National Housing Federation. The campaign has a clear and urgent mission:
-
Celebrate the value of sheltered housing.
-
Secure funding to prevent further closures, following statistics showing one in three schemes faced closure in 2024.
-
Modernise the sector to meet 21st-century expectations and an ageing population.
By hosting MPs and contributing to parliamentary groups, Abbeyfield is working to ensure that the government recognises the essential role sheltered housing plays in society.
Securing the future of sheltered housing
The visit ended on a high note, leaving a lasting impression on the residents and a clear message for the MP. Sheltered housing is a vital lifeline that deserves both political support and sustainable funding to ensure these communities can continue to flourish for years to come.
