Meet Marlene, a much-loved resident at Harrowside House in Blackpool. After a period of loneliness following the loss of her husband, Marlene found a new and fulfilling chapter at Abbeyfield. Her journey to Harrowside House began with a chance conversation, a few kind words that made her think.

A new home through a kind word

During her convalescence, Marlene struck up a conversation with a gentleman who was also recovering, who spoke so highly about the care and companionship he received at his Abbeyfield home. Intrigued and looking for connection, Marlene decided to visit Harrowside House in Blackpool for herself.

From the moment she was welcomed through the doors, Marlene felt at ease. The house had a warm and inviting atmosphere, instantly making her feel like she could belong. "It had a lovely, homely feeling," Marlene recalls, "I just knew I would love it."

Finding friendship and support

Life at Harrowside House proved to be a welcome change from the solitude she had experienced. "It was loads better than when I was on my own," she says with a smile. Her wellbeing improved significantly, thanks to the regular, freshly prepared meals and the pleasure of sharing them with friendly faces.

For Marlene, the staff at Harrowside House have made all the difference. "They always have time, and nothing is too much trouble," she explains, emphasising their kindness and dedication. "Abbeyfield are very lucky to have them."

She also enjoys the conversations with the other residents, appreciating the opportunity to hear different perspectives on various topics. The overall atmosphere of the house is a source of comfort and joy for her. And for someone who describes herself as "very nosey," her window, offering a view of what’s happening at the front, is an added bonus.

Making new friends has been another highlight of Marlene's experience. "Yes, I’ve got lots of new friends to chat to," she says happily, and evenings are often filled with laughter and friendly nattering during games of dominoes and cards.

Looking back, Marlene has no hesitation in recommending Abbeyfield to others. "Come and enjoy, you won't regret it," she advises warmly. For her, the most significant benefit has been the end of feeling loneliness. "The thing I like best of all is not being lonely," she states gratefully. "Thank you, Abbeyfield."
