A new sense of wellbeing, community, and purpose.
Valerie, who recently celebrated her 79th birthday, has lived at Hope Bank View for six years and has found a new sense of wellbeing, community, and purpose. Her journey reflects the many benefits of independent living, especially for those looking for a supportive and engaging home.
A lifetime of caring for others
Valerie’s background is rooted in community service. Having worked as a warden in sheltered accommodation, she has a deep understanding of the needs of older people and has spent much of her life helping others. As a counsellor for Sunderland Mind, she continues to use her skills to make a positive impact. When Valerie decided to move to Hope Bank View, it was a choice made to ensure her wellbeing, allowing her to be in a space where she could be cared for while still contributing to her community.
Enhanced quality of life
Valerie describes her life at Hope Bank View as “immensely better”. The comfort of a warm, safe home and access to nutritious daily meals have added structure and ease to her life. Worries about maintaining a home are no longer a concern, allowing her to focus on activities and connections that enhance her wellbeing. “We haven’t got any big problems at all, so I think it’s really beneficial,” she shares.
Independent living communities like Hope Bank View offer more than just accommodation; they provide peace of mind. Safety, home cooked meals, and a maintenance-free lifestyle mean residents can live more comfortably and with less stress, knowing that their basic needs are taken care of.
A community to belong to
A strong social network is one of the most significant benefits of independent living. Valerie appreciates the social opportunities Hope Bank View provides, explaining that she has the option to either spend time with others or enjoy the privacy of her apartment. She encourages others to join in the shared spaces and activities, where you can also find companionship.
For Valerie, having a choice is essential. Whether spending time downstairs with friends or taking time alone, independent living allows residents to socialise on their own terms, creating a sense of belonging and emotional support that’s invaluable for wellbeing.
Creating purpose and giving back
Within two weeks of moving in, she set up a knitting group, where members create blankets for the local hospice and the premature baby unit. Valerie also ran a weekly bingo session for five years, bringing people together to share fun and laughter.
These activities are about more than just passing time; they’re about giving residents the chance to stay active, engaged, and purposeful. Valerie has positively impacted her community through creativity, leaving a lasting impression.
Why Independent Living is worth considering
For those considering independent living, Valerie offers a few words of wisdom: “I would tell them to come to Hope Bank View where they’re going to be safe.” Safety, regular meals, and the option to socialise makes communities like Hope Bank View an appealing choice for those looking to maintain independence.
Valerie’s story is a powerful reminder that independent living is more than a housing option; it’s a path to a fulfilling lifestyle. For many, it provides a balance of support, community, and freedom—key ingredients for a happier and healthier life.
