Welcomed into the Speedwell Court family
We recently spoke to Alison, whose mum Sheila moved into Speedwell Court following a sudden loss and the need for a new home. Alison shares their journey to finding a care home and how the team at Speedwell Court provided swift, compassionate support during a difficult time.
A quick and seamless move
"Due to the sudden passing of Mum’s husband, Mum needed permanent residential care at very short notice. It was a stressful time that required quick action.
"Without hesitation, we contacted Speedwell Court in West End to check for immediate vacancies. Our biggest priority was finding a place close to me—and since Speedwell is within walking distance of my house, it was ideal.
From that first phone call, the staff were immediately understanding and helpful, able to offer us a choice of two rooms with immediate access.
"The very next day, we visited. Justine greeted us, gave us a wonderful tour, and showed us the available rooms. Mum instantly fell in love with the aspect of one of the rooms, and her decision was made right then and there.
Justine was fantastic. She answered all our questions and prepared all the paperwork for us to complete. An assessment was done quickly to ascertain Mum's care needs. The whole process, from first contact to completing the forms, went incredibly smoothly—which was a huge relief during this time.
"Sadly, Mum’s husband passed away that same morning she was due to move.
"All the staff at Speedwell Court were made aware of the situation and immediately went above and beyond to welcome her, comfort her, and make her feel safe. We brought in lots of family photos and personal possessions to make the room feel like home. Mum's room overlooks the entrance and car park, which gives her plenty to watch—she loves to wave goodbye to her visitors as they leave!"
"I feel like I've been welcomed into the Speedwell family and I appreciate all the help and support they have given us."

Comfort and care
"Mum is very unsteady on her feet due to suffering a stroke and walks with the aid of a frame. She requires help with bathing and dressing, and she takes great comfort in knowing the staff are always there for her.
Since Mum has been living at Speedwell, the convenience of on-site services has made life so much easier for us. She has regular visits from the Chiropodist, and we’ve been able to arrange visits from the Dentist and Optician. Plus, having the option of twice-weekly GP visits if needed has been wonderful given her restricted mobility.
She also enjoys the little luxuries: weekly visits to the in-house hairdresser, being pampered by the carers, and having her nails manicured."
The little things that matter
"The garden is one of her favourite areas—she had a large garden at home and loved growing flowers and vegetables. We love walking through the grounds and sitting in one of the many seating areas dotted around.
"I've even been able to recommend Speedwell Court to others. When some friends needed to find a home for their mother who has Dementia, I told them how happy and well cared for Mum is here. They came to visit with me, liked the friendliness and attention given by the staff, and saw that as a purpose-built care home, it could offer the kind of specialist care and facilities they required. They enquired about the Dementia care, and it met all of their needs.
"I am so happy that Mum is now in a safe, loving, and caring home where I can visit her as often as I like. I feel like I've been welcomed into the Speedwell family and I appreciate all the help and support they have given us.
"I would not hesitate to recommend Speedwell Court to anyone who is looking for a new home for their loved one."
