Hope Bank View residents master digital skills with AbilityNet

Residents at Hope Bank View in Sunderland took part in a digital skills course run by AbilityNet – a UK charity that helps older people feel more confident using technology.

The sessions were delivered by Helen McGuigan, a brilliant trainer who created a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere for learning. The programme was sponsored by BT, so there was no cost to Abbeyfield or the residents.

There were three sessions, one per week over three weeks, based on the following topics:

  • Week 1: How to stay safe online – including spotting scams and protecting your information.
  • Week 2: Using email and messaging apps to stay in touch with family and friends.
  • Week 3: Discovering online entertainment like catch-up TV, music, games and more.

Helen also offered one-to-one support for residents who had specific questions – from using tablets and phones, to managing passwords and settings.

Charles Is Delighted To Be Able To Send Emails To His Family

The residents were keen to learn and soon picked up a few useful skills.

For example, Charles sent an email to his daughter during the session.

“She’ll be very surprised to get an email from me!” he said.
It was a proud moment, and a perfect reminder of how small steps with technology can make a big difference in staying connected.

We believe that staying connected to family and the digital world is essential for well-being. That's why Abbeyfield partners with AbilityNet, a UK charity dedicated to helping older people gain confidence with technology.

This fantastic resource is available to all Abbeyfield residents across our houses and homes.

What support is available?

  • Free one-to-one assistance: Whether you're new to technology or just need a little help managing passwords, trained AbilityNet volunteers offer completely free, personalised support. This can be delivered in the comfort of a resident's own room or a shared communal space.
  • Group courses: While structured courses, like the successful one recently held at Hope Bank View, run based on demand, one-to-one help is always available regardless of your location.

Support is always offered at the resident’s own pace, ensuring a comfortable and effective learning experience.
