Why Choose Independent Living?

Elizabeth Wickens, Housing Manager at Westall House, discusses the reasons why people choose independent living at Westall House and the benefits for residents.

What is independent living at Westall House?

"Independent Living is designed for active, self-reliant individuals. It allows you to live completely self-sufficient with communal hubs to socialise and connect with your neighbours. Our apartments are available to rent or buy and you’re provided with meals (additional costs), staff on hand and access to a 24 hour on call system."

Having a helping hand

"As some people get older, they might find living in their own properties challenging. There’s lots of things to think about, such as paying the window cleaner, the gardener, and the cleaner.  I think one of the things they find appealing about coming here is they can receive help for those things to be arranged and coordinated much more easily.  They haven’t got to worry about the repairs on the property if something goes wrong or breaks. There’s a back up service in place. They’re much more relaxed, at ease, and they haven’t got those pressures of running a house."

Community and companionship

"It’s very much about companionship and making sure people aren't feeling lonely, and that they know there’s always someone around to look after them and care for them. We hold lots of events and activities. Residents really enjoy that we provide that community spirit. It’s like everyone is one big family here, there’s always lots of laughter, it’s a very happy place. There’s always lots of different things going on for people to get involved in, if they want to, and if they don’t want too then that’s fine. But they have that option."

Beautiful surroundings

"One of the big things that attracts people to us here is the location. If people want to live in rural countryside, in the peace and quiet, then that’s exactly what we can provide. Fantastic location, beautiful, lovely grounds, which everyone is welcome to enjoy."

A home from home

"Leaving a long-time home is a major decision for many people. As an alternative, many of our residents choose to keep ownership of their houses or flats. They rent them out and use the income to enjoy life in our Abbeyfield community. This way, they experience the best of both worlds, with the option to return to their homes if they decide it's not the right fit."

Considering independent living?

"I’d encourage everybody to just come here and have a look and see what it’s all about. Ask lots of questions. Talk to the residents, talk to the family members, staff, and just get a vibe really, because I think people are perhaps apprehensive, anxious, don’t really know what to expect. That’s what we tend to do, really encourage people to come along and have a look and experience it themselves."
