Where Older People Are Celebrated, Every Single Day
October 1st is International Day of Older Persons (IDOP), a day dedicated to recognising the wisdom, contributions, and rights of older people. This year, the theme is “Building Belonging: Celebrating the power of our social connections.”
One of our core values at Abbeyfield Living Society is ‘Community’ that supports everything we do. We don’t just celebrate older people once a year; our entire mission is dedicated to creating an environment where everyone thrives in later life.
Living retirement to the full
Our founder, Richard Carr-Gomm, established Abbeyfield almost 70 years ago with the simple yet profound vision of combating loneliness. Today, our residents prove daily that later life is an opportunity to find new purpose and belonging.
At Abbeyfield Living Society, we strive to create an environment where residents feel safe, connected, and empowered.
Read what some of our residents have to say:

Marlene, resident at Harrowside House
"It had a lovely, homely feeling, I just knew I would love it. It was loads better than when I was on my own. Come and enjoy, you won't regret it. The thing I like best of all is not being lonely. Thank you, Abbeyfield."

Janet, resident at Westall House Independent Living
“I participate in nearly all the activities and programs offered, and they enrich my life immensely. They keep me going, both physically and mentally, because of the social interaction.”

Sue, resident at Girton Green
"For me, independence is key, and at Girton Green, I've found the perfect balance of having my own comfortable space while being part of a friendly community.”
A home where you can thrive
At Abbeyfield Living Society, we know that truly thriving means maintaining your independence and feeling a deep sense of belonging. Residents are actively encouraged to make their spaces their own, filling their private rooms with cherished photos and favourite belongings.
On top of this, our dedicated staff and volunteers help combat loneliness and enrich lives by organising activities and outings that spark joy, build connection, and maintain wellbeing.
Here are just some of the ways our residents are enjoying later life:

Self-care & Wellness
From dedicated pamper sessions and hand massages to having local professionals come to us, we ensure our residents have easy access to the things that make them feel great, promoting confidence and dignity.

Heading Out
Staying connected to the local area is essential for wellbeing. Our staff organise regular excursions—from seaside trips and market visits to cultural outings—ensuring residents can explore and maintain their independence outside of the house.

Group Learning & Creativity
Whether it’s sharing a skill, mastering a new craft, or working together on a collaborative project, our activities nurture creativity and spark new friendships. This shared focus is key to building social connections and having fun.

Wild Encounters
We bring unique and exciting experiences directly to our residents. Interacting with visiting animals and even exotic creatures promotes sensory engagement, emotional wellbeing, and unforgettable moments of awe and curiosity.

Community Fun
We love to celebrate special occasions and welcome special guests. These group events are perfect for getting together, sharing a laugh, and reinforcing that wonderful sense of belonging and mutual support.

Gratitude & Reflection
We encourage positive mental health by taking time for reflection and celebrating the good things in life. Simple activities, like sharing what we are thankful for or what makes us happy, builds an atmosphere of kindness, empathy, and positive connection.
Championing the sector
Our commitment to dignity and quality of life for older people extends beyond the doors of our own homes. We are passionate advocates for change across the entire sector, aligning with our value of Excellence and our charitable purpose.
Abbeyfield Living Society proudly supports the work of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Housing and Care for Older People. We sponsored their recent inquiry into the regeneration of outdated sheltered housing.
We recognise that many older people across the UK live in inadequate accommodation that often exacerbates loneliness and makes support difficult. By collaborating with the APPG, we demonstrate our determination to use our expertise and voice to influence policy, ensuring that all older people have access to high-quality, safe, and stimulating homes that allow them to live independently and thrive.
Our mission is not just for our residents; it’s to help build a world where everyone enjoys an outstanding, connected later life.
