A look behind the scenes with Gail
Ever wondered what keeps a care home running smoothly behind the scenes? From busy morning routines to the quiet moments that make it all worthwhile, Gail tells us about her role to share what it is like to be a vital part of the team at Sandwood Care Home.
“It takes a lot of flexibility and warmth to keep a home running smoothly, and that is exactly what I love about my role as a General Assistant here at Sandwood. I actually started out working as a carer, which I loved, before moving into a dual role that let me work in the kitchen too.
"Today, my job combines a bit of everything, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Here is a look at what my typical shift looks like, and why the residents make every minute worthwhile.
From breakfasts to bright spaces
“My day starts by taking over from the previous shift, and from there, the morning is a bit of a whirlwind centred around our dining and communal areas. I finish up with breakfasts, make sure everyone has their drinks, clear the tables, and tidy up the dining spaces.
"I also wash the pots and put everything away, so the kitchen is completely organised. Balancing the kitchen tasks with looking after the rest of the building just comes down to staying proactive.
"As I go along, if I see anything that needs doing, I clean it right then and there to ensure all the surfaces and rooms stay immaculate.

"The most rewarding parts of my shift are things that would never appear on a formal job description. It is seeing the residents happy and comfortable. Sometimes, the connection you build really catches you off guard. I once had a resident say thank you to me in a way that made me cry because it made me feel so special."
Making a difference where it matters most
“Because my role covers so many different areas, I get to see parts of the home that others might miss. One thing I notice that makes a massive difference to the residents is the daily activities programme. In fact, if I were showing a friend around Sandwood for the first time, the things I would be proudest to show them are our incredible staff and our activities display board. The day centre is easily one of my favourite spots because it is always full of life and things to do.
“People might be surprised by how varied my day is, but my main focus is helping others whenever it is needed, including assisting the residents directly. We all pitch in to ensure the smooth running of the day. When a new resident arrives, I do everything I can to make them feel welcome, reassured, and completely at home so they know they belong in our community.
The best part of the job
“If you asked me to describe the spirit of Sandwood in three words, I would choose caring, friendly, and atmospheric. The best thing about being part of this team is our sense of humour. When I first started, everyone was incredibly friendly and supported me through those first few weeks while I was finding my feet.
“The most rewarding parts of my shift are things that would never appear on a formal job description. It is seeing the residents happy and comfortable. Sometimes, the connection you build really catches you off guard. I once had a resident say thank you to me in a way that made me cry because it made me feel so special.
“For anyone thinking about working in a care home but worrying that they don't have enough experience, my advice is to learn as you go. If you are ever unsure of anything, just ask - that is my top tip for anyone joining us. Always ask if you aren't sure and then have confidence in yourself.”
