Fun and fundraising for our residents' fund
Residents, staff, and families at Hampton House in Solihull recently came together for a week of games, entertainment, and community activities. The event marked the 70th anniversary of Abbeyfield, bringing everyone together for a fantastic cause.
Thanks to the generosity of our community, we raised a grand total of £707.65 for our residents’ fund. This money goes straight towards future activities and events, helping everyone here stay active and connected.
Our activities coordinator, Sarah Allen, organised the week, which was packed with memorable moments from start to finish.
Giant hungry hippos and a young champion
We proved that you are never too old or too young to get involved in a bit of friendly competition. Our lounge was transformed for a human fruit machine and a giant version of Hungry Hippos.
Five-year-old Aurora took on our residents in a series of matches and came out on top as the day's champion.
Resident Dot said, “I really enjoyed the games afternoon with Aurora. She was so energetic and bubbly.”
Play your cards right and reggae rhythms
The team from specialist equipment supplier Britton Price dropped by to host a coffee morning. They brought along a quiz and a game of Play Your Cards Right, which everyone got involved in, though the best part of the morning was chatting and finding common ground in music tastes.
Sarah said, “Mark and Tonya were fantastic with the residents. Everyone enjoyed the quiz, games and conversations - especially discovering our shared love of reggae music.”
Mark added, “We really enjoyed the visit and would be happy to come back - especially if it’s reggae themed!”
Richard’s garden marathon
The standout effort of the week came from resident Richard Bunce. Having recently suffered a stroke, Richard has been working hard learning to walk again. To mark the 70-year milestone, he set himself a personal challenge: a sponsored walk of 70 laps around our garden.
Cheered on by everyone at the house, Richard hit his goal.
Sarah said, “Richard did an amazing job. He has come such a long way since his stroke, and he wanted to prove to himself that he could do it. As he says, your mind is so powerful – if you really believe you can do something, you can.”
Crafting, chatting, and bargain hunting
Alongside the busier afternoons, we enjoyed some quieter moments, including a knit-and-natter group led by volunteers from our local church.
To round off the week, Hampton House held a bring-and-buy sale, which was a great opportunity for residents to clear out a few bits from their flats and pick up some excellent bargains.
